American Psycho

American Psycho is not your average horror movie. It might even be a black comedy if interpreted by the right twisted person. Yet this movie was rated NC-17 until cut down to be rated R. For a good reason:

It's pretty disturbing--no, really very very disturbing.

So why am I writing this review? Because it was well-acted, well-directed, and really it was basically amazing.

It is a satire of American values, especially the obsession the main character has with himself. Surprisingly this movie seems modern, even though it was set in the 80's. That doesn't exactly speak for the morality of America, but who would go watch a horror movie about a saint? well ok that might be interesting. The point is that this movie attacks the idea of the egoistic main character who has narcissistic issues that involve destruction of other people.

I'm not suggesting you go running to the video store (or Netflix, as the case may be) but consider watching it if you have the time and mind capacity to be really freaked out.

Of course, it might not scare you. In my opinion, however, it will scare you only if you are good at analyzing people's behavior. Me and Ginny both have incredible people-analyzing abilities. We could predict most of the murders (we are avid fans of Agatha Christie) but this is part of the reason it was so damn scary. Anticipation of the murder is worse than the actual thing. And the music doesn't help.

Let me also say that we watched the unrated version...so it might have been a bit more graphic than the rated one, but apparently Ginny has weird taste in renting things. The film might be less freaky with more cut out of it. Or rather...less cut in it.

I am writing in this post only because absolutely no one has updated it and it is driving me nuts.

Since it is perhaps my favorite holiday ever, Halloween, I would like to recommend to you all The Craft. A fantabulous movie about a quatre-o of witches, it both scary and catty at the same time, leaving the projected female teenage audience quite joyous. While some people will complain that The Craft is too scary it really is much tamer than the horror thrills they put out now like Saw and The Grudge. The gore is basically non-existant and the scare focuses on what witches can do. With an inspiringly normal performance by Robin Tunney and Neve Cambell of the Scream flicks, this movie is a good way to fill up a teenage Halloween party.

the best movie ever

I think we all agree that everyone should see Heathers at least once. Preferably twice.
